Assignment Unit 5 - TV & Short film production

Task 4 - P4 / M3

P4

Focus group questionnaire for the final production to obtain feedback about the film we had created, this allows us to pose question to a sample of our target audience to see if they liked the film and what improvements could be made. The focus group comprised of a mix of boys and girls aged 16, who all live in East London, this was a good sample as the film is based on Urban Legends in East London so they will be able to relate to the content and tell me if it appeals to their demographic. There was a variety of different backgrounds in my group so i was able to see if the film was interesting to people of different demographics.
We presented the film to the group with a short introduction and after they watched the film, we left the group to complete their questionnaires individually. After that we were able to collect all the answers and see if there were trends between the responses.

These are the questions asked in the questionnaire to get feedback for our short film and find out what things were good and what improvements are needed.

EVALUATION OF THE SHORT FILM

From the feedback we got about our short film, we realised the viewpoints of others and how it could differ if done in a different way. In terms of how far the short film fits in together with the genre, can be seen as a positive thing, as the feedback demonstrates the film fits very well with the genre.
The audience has expressed their view of what they think of the characters ranging from relatable, funny, realistic and convincing. Regarding the different genres that the story crosses over with, horror and mystery as well as comedy and thriller have been identified.
The audience thought that the soundtrack was creepy, intense and it fits well. This is probably through the way it was presented, as the eeriness matches with the story overall.
In addition everyone agreed on the film showcasing East London, mostly because of the buses, graffiti art in Shoreditch, trains and also the map of East End all gave the audience the idea of it being part and representative of the urban area. Some people thought that the story was told well as it was easy to understand, therefore they did not want the story to be told in a different way. But also other people thought that it could have been told from someone else's viewpoint.
Everyone recognised the locations portrayed in the short film. They were familiar with Tower Hamlets Cemetery Park, Mulberry UTC, Tesco Bow, Shoreditch, Roman Road Market, Bus stops.
In terms of who would they suggest to watch the film, they stated their siblings, family, friends and other teenagers. The parts of the film that has been enjoyed mostly by the audience are the conversations between the characters, opening whispers, when Zara gets the phone call, the sound effects when one of the characters is begging to forgive them and said sorry.
Finally, the audience have expressed their viewpoints on ways in which the film can be improved. They said there was too much audio, different locations, transitions and the visuals and audio could be improved in the shot where the characters are at home.

From the feedback we got, we can that the strenghts of the short film are the fact that it fits very well and matches with the genre and urban theme. They said the characters are funny, ralatable and convincing which shows that it is beneficial. In terms of the soundtrack people have expressed a really positive feedback, stating it fits well as it is intense and creepy, enriching the potentials of the short film. This demonstrates another strenght of the short film. Although the audience have all agreed that it clearly showcases East London, it makes the short film even better in terms of its potentiality. Later on from the feedback we found out the storyline was understandable and told effectively, many of the scenes have been appreciated from them and they all managed to recognise some of the locations within our film. All these affirmative feedback from the audience shows how our film was valued and played a significant role in strenthening its capacityto fit the urban genre. Moreover, as well as postive responses we also had some weaknesses. For example someone said that it could have been told from someone else's viewpoint. To this we thought about different characters within the film and how they could have told the story in a different way. From exaple it could have been from Maria's point of view instead of Zara, or even the other characters that have been mentioned like Alana's or Mr Grant's perspectives. It could also be a flashback story. Later on it has also been announced on the feedback that it had too many locations, too much audio as well as the improvement of transitions and visuals in the shots where the characters are at home. To this we discussed that the several settings could be decreased selecting only the locations that have the most significance to the story. In terms of editing, the audio of the whispers could also be lessened as it might disturbing if it is too repetetive or even too loud. Then to improve the visuals and transitions of the scenes of the home interior, could be refined by using better lighting and positioning of the camera inside the house. This could even be filmed into another location like another room where there is more exposure to the light, in order to upgrade the scenes where the characters are at home. Finally, to properly adjust the transitions within the scenes inside the house, we could enhance it by applying effects of transitions that would fit with the storyline and genre. This could be the use of a quick cut, fade in, or dissolve. This would make the scene look simplistic and perfect, making it not too distant from the storyline flow or even making it too flashy and colouful that could have an impact of the meaning and representation of the genre.
